Neutral Carbon Tourism Certification

The program´s goal is to implement a process of “certification” in local tourism, differentiating the tourists and tourist facilities that neutralize carbon emissions (CO2) generated by their activities.

What is a “Carbon Free Tourism Certification” ?

The Carbon Free Tourism Certification has the overall goal of sustainable tourism development and aims to transform the Itacaré- Serra Grande Environmental Area into a model destination for neutralization and reduction of CO2, linking environmental conservation with the socio-economical development of traditional farming families.

Who takes part in it?

The basic idea is to neutralize the CO2 emissions generated by the operation of those local tourist facilities, which receive the Carbon Free Certification (Inns, Hotels, Resorts, Restaurants, bars, Laundries and so on).

How does it work?

The financial resources gathered through the CO2 neutralization of those facilities taking part in the program are directed to the traditional small-scale farmers of the Itacaré-Serra Grande Environmental Area who receive the Bolsa Conservação – a monthly financial aid for conservation – to produce and plant the seedlings of the trees which will neutralize their CO2 emissions.

Can the tourists also neutralize their emissions ?

Yes ! They will also be able to off-set their carbon footprints generated during their holidays. In the certified hotels and inns they will be informed how to take part and to collaborate.

So, a carbon free destination …

That’s it ! A Carbon Free Destination is where all those involved in the tourist sector neutralize their CO2 emissions. The Carbon Free Tourism Certification seal, placed in Inns, Hotels, Restaurants, Bars etc.. demonstrates to tourists that they are in a unique destination!
This is the innovative tourist identity we want to bring to the Itacaré ∕ Serra Grande Environmental Area: a carbon free destination.

That’s all about a Carbon Free Destination?

No! The construction of a Carbon Free Destination has to go through a long process of finding solutions for age-old problems : such as the garbage, for a example.

The goal is to look for and involve entrepreneurs, community members and government agents in the construction of a tourist identity directed towards environmental conservation and the sustainable development of the traditional populations.

Who is monitoring the activities of the program?

The team members of the Movement of Life develop, implement and monitor the activities of the program with the traditional farmers. However, the best part of all is that this Certificate belongs to our territory and all related activities are carried out here in the Itacaré / Serra Grande Environmental Area. Which is to say that YOU can monitor everything that happens, YOU can visit the properties where reforestation is being performed and YOU may also, monitor the Social Carbon Fund.
